Recap of the road to the championship

After being turned away last year in the finals of this tournament on an overtime goal, this group of Griffins was not to be denied. Griffins won all three of their preliminary round robin games to advance to the semifinals as the top seed, beating Michigan Jags (7-0), Flint Phantoms (3-2), and Traverse City (6-1). Their Semi-final opponent was the team that knocked them out in the finals the previous year, the Flint Icelanders. The Griffins had a score to settle and this was a great opportunity. Both teams came out fast and physical but the Griffins controlled most of the game and ended with a 4-0 win advancing to the Finals. The Final was a matchup of their round robin game 2 opponent, the Flint Phantoms. Phantoms got on the board first with a couple nice goals, but it was not long until the Griffins found their game and tied it up 2-2. The Griffins went ahead in the 3rd, but with only a couple minutes left in regulation the Phantoms tied the game at 3 sending the game into overtime. Four minutes into the overtime period, the Phantoms were sent to the box for a tripping penalty and the aggressive play of the Power Play unit on the ice was too much for the Phantoms to deny. Only 24 seconds into the power play, Justin Chopp slammed home the game winner and then it was gloves in the air and high fives all around. In January, the Griffins will travel to Newmarket, Ontario, Canada to compete for the International Silver Stick Championship, one of the most coveted titles in youth hockey.
